NieR Re[in]carnation – Newbie Guide & Introduction

Preface

This post will cover what to expect/do in NieR Re[in]carnation(I won’t go into the finer details of everything, that’s beyond my Japanese capabilities!).

Introduction

Nier Reincarnation (Nier Rein) is your typical mobile gacha game. The game is free to download and free to play. The gacha and stamina systems are what keeps the servers, etc. running. What differentiates Nier Rein from most other gachas is that you are not pulling for units per se. The gacha revolves around weapons. Some weapons just happen to come along with a unit. The rest of the gacha mechanics are the same. Pulling dupes will provide materials to limit break/awaken the weapon (and unit, if it comes with a unit). Limit breaking a weapon/unit increases the weapon/unit level cap by 5 levels – all the standard jazz.

Gacha

There are 3 gachas: premium, chapter, and event.

Premiun gacha is where you spend the in-game currency (gems) to pull for weapons. And as mentioned in the intro, some weapons come with a unit attached.

Chapter gacha is where you spend chapter tickets (that you acquire from grinding the chapter quests) to pull for various materials to upgrade your units, etc.

Event gacha (I haven’t unlocked it yet, so no comment!)

There’s apparently a gacha you can pull once every day that will give you free 5 pulls once you have completed chapter 8. I haven’t reached that state yet – but I trust Cabbage!

Quests

At the heart of the game are what the game calls quests. The quests section is divided into three areas: main quest, support quests, and arena (unlocked after completing chapter 6 of the main quest).

Main quest is the main story of the game. You walk around the cage completing various mini stories in a linear fashion – it’s a one-way journey, so make sure to tap all those black birds before you move on to next section. As you progress through this main quest, other sections of the game unlocks. Only the gacha is unlocked from the get-go.

Support quests are your standard quests to grind for materials to upgrade your units, weapons, otomos and memories. You will also find the event quests here – which some have a bit of a story to it. Like the Nier: Automata collab event quests.

Arena as its name suggests is where you’ll put your team against other player’s teams. Battle it out to earn arena medals that you can use to exchange for goodies in the arena medal exchange shop. Arena is unlocked once you complete main quest chapter 6.

Units

Units range from 2-star to 4-star, where 4-star is the rarest rarity. There’s a bit of a trend with units. Based on what I’m seeing, there is a 2-star, 3-star, and 4-star of every unit from the main story. The 2-star is handed out to you when you complete the associated chapter. As for Nier:Automata, I’m only seeing 3-star and 4-star units. Guessing that’s cos 2-star is only acquirable via the main story?

There’s no unit skill tree or any complicated skills system. Just grind for materials to upgrade the unit levels, skill/ability levels, and limit break to enable higher level cap. There’s also rank, but I think that gets increased only via battles – someone who knows how this works, hit me up!

Weapons

Weapons range from 2-star to 4-star as well. But there’s no 2-star, 3-star, or 4-star versions as far as I know. All weapons are unique.

Weapons have elements associated with them and this defines whether you or your opponent has the typing advantage or disadvantage. Apart from this, everything else is standard stuff, pull dupes for limit break and grind for materials to upgrade weapon for more stats.

Otomos

Otomos are those little things that float around the shoulder of your units. So far, all my otomos are acquired through completing the main quest chapters.

They’re pretty simple. They come with a element typing and a skill. The element typing only affects the skill they provide in battle. You grind for materials to upgrade them, the upgrade increases their skills stats as well as the otomo’s stats. The otomo stats are added to the unit stats its equipped on.

Memories

Memories are handed out as you complete the main story chapters. You can also grind for them in support quests.

They’re the simplest of the lot. Leveling them up only costs Gold. They simply provide extra stats to the unit its equipped on. Memories are part of sets of 3. Equipping the full set will provide extra bonus stats/effects to the associated unit.

Battle team

A battle team consists of 3 units. 1 main unit and 2 sub units. The minimum for a battle team is the main unit.

Each unit can equip:

– up to 3 weapons. The main weapon defines the element type for the unit. The other 2 sub weapons only provide extra stats to the unit. (you can equip any type of weapon. However, equipping a weapon the unit is fluent in provides extra bonus stats)

– up to 1 otomo (you can equip any otomo in your inventory)

– up to 3 memories (equipping the full set will provide extra bonus stats/effects)

Battle system

The battle system is a real-time turn-based battle system. Prety standard. I don’t see anything particularly interesting or different. Only thing I would say is that the otomo skills do not trigger in auto mode. You need to manually trigger otomo skills.

Mini Games

There’s 2 mini games in the game. I haven’t unlocked the second one yet. So I’ll just talk about the first one. It’s a shooting game that will restore your stamina. You can play is once every 9 hours.

Friends

There’s a friends system in the game too. So far, all I see is that you can restore a bit of stamina once a day from it.

I think that pretty much sums up all the things to do in the game in a nutshell.
